What is a birth chart?

A birth chart (also called a natal chart) is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. It records where every planet sat against the zodiac, which of the twelve houses each one fell into, and the angles — the aspects — each planet made to the others. Because the sky is always in motion, that arrangement is unique to your birth moment, and traditional astrology reads it as a portrait of temperament, tendencies, and the areas of life each house governs.

This calculator uses the Placidus house system by default — the most widely used house division in modern Western astrology — and computes every position from the Swiss Ephemeris, the same astronomical engine used by professional astrology software. You can switch to Regiomontanus, Whole Sign, Equal, and other systems in chart settings if you prefer a different tradition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an exact birth time?

For the most accurate houses and Ascendant, yes — birth time genuinely matters, since the houses and the Moon's precise degree shift as the sky turns. If you don't know your exact time, a placeholder like noon still gives you correct planetary signs and degrees; only the house cusps and Ascendant will be approximate.

Why does this default to Placidus instead of another house system?

Placidus is the most commonly used house system in contemporary Western natal astrology, so it's the sensible default for a general birth-chart tool. It's a genuinely different choice from OracleSanctum's horary tool, which defaults to Regiomontanus — the house system traditional horary practice has historically favored. Both systems, and several others, are available in this tool's chart settings.

How is this different from OracleSanctum's horary tool?

This tool and the horary chart tool share the same underlying calculation engine, but they're built for different purposes. Horary casts a chart for the moment a specific question is asked, and judges that one question. This tool casts a natal chart for a birth moment, with no question involved, and reads the whole chart as a standing portrait rather than an answer to one thing.

Does OracleSanctum offer KP (Krishnamurti Paddhati) astrology too?

Yes — KP birth chart reading and KP horary are separate tools, built on the sidereal zodiac with the Krishnamurti ayanamsa and stellar sub-lord theory, which is a genuinely different tradition from the tropical Western astrology this page uses.
